Heidfeld critical of engine map rules
Nick Heidfeld believes the new rule that stops teams from changing the engine mapping between qualifying and the race is going "too far". The FIA announced after the Canadian Grand Prix that teams will have to use the same maps both in the race and in qualifying, in a move aimed at stopping radical qualifying-only maps. Renault driver Heidfeld has joined Red Bull's Mark Webber in questioning the timing of the rule changes, as he doesn't understand why something that was legal is illegal now.

Single DRS detection point to remain
The FIA is to stick with a single detection area for the two DRS zones at this weekend's European Grand Prix, following a successful debut for the concept in Canada last weekend. With the DRS having been used in two areas in Montreal, the FIA has confirmed that it plans to have a similar double concept again in Spain - although it will not be used along the start-finish straight. Superleague Formula has postponed its maiden trip to the Smolensk Ring until at least 2012 as the circuit will not be ready in time to host the series' proposed September round. Muller leads Chevy practice dominance
Yvan Muller led a Chevrolet 1-2-3 in the opening practice session for the World Touring Car Championship round at Brno. After sitting out the first half of the session, reigning champion Muller jumped to the top of the timesheets with just six minutes of free practice to run. The 2012 Lamborghini Aventador has officially arrived in the United States, and we're not sure if it arrived by boat or simply left the ground and flew across the Atlantic (it could do that, you know). Jordan Shiraki (ShirakiPhoto), working for Las Vegas Lamborghini and eGarage.com, was the lucky lensman who got to spend time with the newest angry bull. Shiraki scored the exclusive photo shoot, and we're happy to share the photos, which can be viewed the attached high-res image gallery.
We think Europe has had enough time to play with the car, and we look forward to more video and photography of the Aventador having fun here in the States. For now, Shiarki's shots will help satiate our Lambo desires.

Toyota testing new LMP1 car
Toyota has been testing an all-new LMP1 car since last year, and could return to the Le Mans 24 Hours as early as 2012, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine. The Japanese manufacturer commissioned the machine, which is known to incorporate hybrid technology and comply with the 2011 prototype technical regulations, from racing car constructor Dome. When asked about the possibility of Toyota returning to top-line prototype racing, Vincent Beaumesnil, sporting manager of Le Mans organiser the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, said: "We are in contact with many manufacturers who are interested in LMP1, not just Toyota." Toyota last competed at Le Mans as a full manufacturer in 1999, but supplied engines to the Rebellion LMP1 squad on a customer basis this year.

Official: Lexus releases 2011 LS 460 Touring Edition

Lexus has aimed its 2011 LS 460 Touring Edition at a less frumpy crowd, giving the ride new 19-inch wheels and a sportier body kit. The Touring Edition goes on sale later this month with a sticker price of $73,000 before destination charges.
To keep things looking fresh, Lexus is adding a special mica paint job to the limited-production sedan. The Touring Edition package also features sport seats, matte-finish wood paneling and black leather upholstery with saddle leather accents.
Lexus says this thing will be built in limited numbers, but doesn't say how limited. Want one? Get in line now. Catch the full press release after the jump.

Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen says he is determined to up his game ahead of this week's Acropolis Rally, as Ford still searches for its first gravel win in the Fiesta RS WRC. Hirvonen won the opening round of this year's world championship with a confident drive to victory on the Swedish Rally, but since then, Citroen drivers Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier have secured the top step of the podium on the following five rounds of the WRC. Despite admitting to a lacklustre performance last time out in Argentina, Hirvonen remains just 13 points adrift of Loeb's championship lead.

What we have here is a sitcom-length video of the battery-powered Nissan Leaf Nismo RC lapping the famed Circuit de la Sarthe prior to the running of the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans. Behind the wheel is none other than Nissan's number two in command, Carlos Tavares.
Recorded on June 11th during the "Le Mans vers le futur" - a demonstration event designed to showcase some potential vehicles of the future - the onboard cam puts you in the middle of the on-track action. It's 22-plus minutes of electrifying driving... literally. So, hit the jump to find out what it's like to drive electrified.
FYI, the pace picks up about three minutes in, though we wish Tavares had taken an all-put lap instead of following the slower BMW ahead. Maybe next time...
