Last week we told you about the fresh, faster Nürburgring track times of the Nissan GTR, with video that proves that Godzilla 2012 managed to shave 2.48 seconds off its best lap. We were under the impression that the GTR's new top time wasn't enough to best the Corvette ZR1, but a side-by-side (or rather a top-to-bottom) comparison video of both runs gives us the definitive answer.
Beyond the jump is a video pitting the in-car camera view of the ZR1 (top screen) versus the 2012 GTR (bottom screen). Pay close attention from the five minute mark to about 6:20 into the clip, as the vehicle with the lead loses it for good at this point in the race. Very entertaining little competition, but you'll have to hit the jump and watch to see the winner for yourself.

Word is that Mercedes-Benz is planning a whole mess of debuts for the upcoming New York Auto Show. Among them, according to reports, are three worldwide first we've yet to see, along with three North American debuts.
The models being unveiled for the first time on this side of the Atlantic includes the new SLK, C-Class sedan and C-Class Coupe. As for the world debuts, sources suggest we'll be seeing two new variants from the AMG division and one all-new concept car. Now we already know the above-pictured C63 AMG Coupe will be among them, but rumor has it that the SLS AMG Roadster will be unveiled at the show as well.
As for that mystery concept, speculation is that it could be the new B-Class or a preview of the next M-Class crossover. We'll have to wait to find out for sure, but with less than a month to go before the doors open at the Javits Center, we won't have to wait long.

Swivel toolboxes officially on our holiday wishlists

Tool boxes haven't changed much over the years, and even the bottom-rung outfits look a lot like the high-rent tool cubbies. At least that used to be the case before the Swivel tool box hit the market. This 60-inch tool storage system contains rounded, high-strength drawers that swivel out so its owner can better-access his or her equipment. And, of course, "high-strength" is a relative term, but in the case of the Swivel box we're talking about 2-, 14- or 16-gauge steel, and the drawers are reportedly tough enough that most humans (now there's a relative term...) can stand on them without breaking anything.
If you've ever owned a tool box, especially the low-end models, you know that the tracks get gummed up over time, making it more and more difficult to slide drawers open or closed. The drawers of the Swivel bench are hinged at a steel pole that is reportedly impervious to dust.
So how much will a Swivel bench set you back? Try between $1,000 and $5,000; a total that puts the Swivel bench squarely in the professional grade category. That's probably a bit rich for our blood, but it won't keep us from wanting one.

Montoya claims Fontana Cup pole
Juan Pablo Montoya claimed his sixth Sprint Cup Series pole position in qualifying for Sunday's race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. The Colombian had run seventh fastest in a rain-delayed practice, which gave him one of the late slots to complete his qualifying run. On his first and only lap he knocked off Joe Gibbs Racing's Joey Logano from provisional pole with a lap time of 38.992s - the only driver breaking the 39-second bracket - at an average speed of 184.652mph

Horner surprised by Red Bull pace
Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has admitted that he is as surprised as everyone else about the strong form his team's new RB7 has shown in Australia. In the advertising world, the gentle ribbing of competitors is almost a given. Whether its dish soap, paper towels, computer companies or automobiles, poking a little fun at your main rivals is the name of the game. But sometimes a company or its advertising agency goes a little too far, and that sometimes means the long arm of the law is dredged up and forced into service.
Such is the case with corporate rivals Nissan and Ford. Apparently, Nissan ran an advertisement in Brazil for its Tiida (known as the Versa here in the States) that may be most notable for its complete lack of any actual Nissan products. Instead, the commercial revolved solely around the Ford Focus, and specifically its base asking price, which is 3,000 reais ($1,806) higher than the Tiida.
No harm in pointing out that your product is cheaper than a competitor's, right? Well, apparently that depends on how you go about it, as Ford took exception to the use of the two rather irritating rappers and a gaggle of scantily clad bikini models drinking champagne and dancing provocatively around the Focus, explaining how they live in the lap of luxury by overcharging customers. Yeah, it's kind of funny.

Horner surprised by Red Bull pace
Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has admitted that he is as surprised as everyone else about the strong form his team's new RB7 has shown in Australia. Although the reigning world champions had headed into the Albert Park event as favourites, it is the team's advantage over the rest of the field that has raised eyebrows - with Sebastian Vettel eight tenths clear of his nearest challenger. Horner says that he too did not expect such a level of dominance ? as he once again took a cheeky swipe at comments from Lewis Hamilton about Red Bull just being a drinks company rather than a full-on racing team.

Vettel storms to Melbourne pole
Sebastian Vettel started his world championship defence in imperious form by dominating qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver was comfortably quickest in Q1 and Q2, then 0.8 seconds ahead of the rest of the field after the first Q3 runs were complete. That 1m23.529s effort was sufficient to secure the 16th pole of Vettel's Formula 1 career, though he ended the session with a 1m23.6s for good measure - also quicker than anyone else could manage

Porsche planning Ferrari 458 challenger?

Porsche would like to double its current sales volume, and to do that, the automaker will need to expand its lineup. The Cajun crossover and 918 are still a year or three away, and we're always hearing talk of a sub-Boxster roadster or even a baby Panamera being in the cards. But what about a new coupe to take on Maranello's finest?
Autocar claims that such a supercar could be on the way, and it would go toe-to-toe with the Ferrari 458 Italia. The British mag reports that Porsche boss Mathias Muller would like the company to produce another mid-engine offering, adding "we're thinking above the 911 but below the 918 Spyder." Muller also says that Porsche already has some designs that still need further development, and that a business case still needs to be made.
If such a Porsche were to find its way to production, it would need plenty of lightweight materials. And since Audi now shares a family tree with Porsche, the new supercar could share the R8's aluminum space frame chassis. If that doesn't work, a heavily-modified (and larger) 911 platform would probably do the trick, too.
At any rate, such a super-Porsche appears to be a long way from a production green light, much less a showroom floor. Still, it's nice to dream, and we don't mind waking up to a world with one more Porsche from which to choose.

Button not getting carried away
Jenson Button says he is not getting carried away despite setting the quickest time on Friday, the Briton insisting today's times mean nothing. Button topped the times in the afternoon session in Melbourne, the McLaren driver leading team-mate Lewis Hamilton in a good session for the team. ITV increases BTCC live coverage
The British Touring Car Championship will receive approximately 139 hours of live television coverage on ITV this year. The network, which has broadcast the series since 2002, will screen at least seven hours of live coverage from each event in high definition for the first time on ITV4 HD and simultaneously on ITV4 and on the ITV Sport website. Additionally, hour-long highlights programmes from each round will be broadcast on ITV4 and ITV1 in the week following each event, taking the championship's total TV time to 153 hours during the year
